Local GOP Nomination Fight Augurs Tight Off-Year Vote
Charges fly as Samples alleges state job offer for withdrawal and his son Terry was fired from a county post. Askew and party officials deny both. A March 12 appointment as a $10 980 a year conciliator with the state Department of Labor is disputed and a replacement may be named if Samples wins. Democrats campaign against Republicans amid weak organization for Coleman and Emery. Yeavock seeks support in Herrin with likely strong east county votes. Voter turnout is expected to be light with one office on the ballot.
