Appropriation For Survey Approved For Devil's Kitchen Cabin Sites
Rep Kenneth Gray announced a five to six month drawing for about 509 cabin sites at Devil's Kitchen Lake pending surveying. A $45,080 Senate appropriation will fund the survey, with work starting July 1 and a White House signature anticipated within ten days. About 200 to 1,000 sites may be leased at roughly $100 per year with two years for lessee improvements. Gray noted concession advertising for the beach and boat area at the lake’s west end, with potential operation by a concessionaire by 39 Mays. The Interior Dept uniform standards may affect future concessions including new crab orchard boat docks.

Herrin Street Repair Budget Talks Set For Summer Work
Herrin city committee on public improvements mapped the street repair budget with chairman John J McCarty and aldermen Mario Miriani Louis Balando and treasurer William Drake. They expect another meeting Friday and a report to the council Monday. Drake said $3000 may be spent on non arterial street materials while labor and equipment may total 38000 from the general fund. Major work relies on state fuel tax refunds, about 34000 last year, to be applied to arterial streets. The program should start in September after motor fuel tax work. Aldermen and Mayor Fred Henderson discussed shifting to a monthly spending plan rather than annual appropriation. Several departments face tentative budget restrictions.
