Carbondale Aims Ordinance Over Malpractice Costs

Mayor Brad Cole says if Illinois lawmakers do not fix rising medical malpractice insurance the city will craft an ordinance to ease the burden. The goal is to deter doctors from leaving the region as costs rise, while local legislators push for a solution during the spring session.

West Frankfort Car Show draws 100 plus entries

In spite of threatening weather the West Frankfort Car Association drew more than 100 entries from a 150 mile radius to its annual car show at the city park. Scott Williams and Greg Murphy praised the turnout while noting the rain held off. Podschweit won Mayor's Award and Best In Class with a 1934 Ford three window coupe built from a Danville frame and chassis. The red coupe features custom air vents, a hand built air box, tilt steering and cruise control. The tail lights are from a 2001 Plymouth Prowler. Podschweit values the car at over 65000 and would not part with it.

Festa boosts Herrin trade despite lower attendance

Festa brought big weekend business to Herrin despite a 15 to 20 percent drop in attendance from bad weather. Motels in Herrin and Marion reported full weekends, with Park Avenue Motel, Days Inn, and other hotels booked solid. Local Lombard Cafe saw increased traffic as festival patrons dined nearby.

Reagan Death Triggers World Tributes and Mourning

Ronald Reagan died at 93 from pneumonia linked to Alzheimer's. In Santa Monica mourners left jelly beans flowers and flags for the 40th president as Nancy Reagan expressed relief he is no longer suffering. Time magazine excerpt quotes Nancy calling him principled and ego free with a Cold War victory and a mold-broken character.
