Tampon fibers linked to toxic shock risk study findings
Harvard researchers report that two absorbent tampon fibers remove magnesium from the vagina, creating a low magnesium environment that raises Staphylococcus aureus toxin production. The study, funded by Tambrands, is set to appear in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. Between 1980 and 1984, 2683 TSS cases and 114 deaths were recorded, with most victims tampon users.
