Senate panel votes to end UHT milk aid to Third World
The Senate Agriculture Committee voted 9-8 to let a two year pilot program expire on Sept 30 1986. The program which began in 1983 aimed to donate 40000 metric tons of ultra high temperature milk to developing nations at a cost near 50 million dollars. Senator Mitch McConnell said the plan was a misguided bailout for a special interest and noted only 1000 tons had been shipped in the first year. The milk source plants are limited with Dairymen Inc in Savannah Georgia as the largest producer.
