Inspections lag at Illinois coal mines say St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports only one of 90 required health inspections by the Bureau of Mines last year at Illinois underground coal mines. About half of required inspections at hazardous mines were made, though the number of inspectors rose to 13 from 2. Maurice Childers notes hazardous status reflects methane risk and not necessarily poor management. The Health and Safety Act aims for full enforcement by year end.
