SIU plans underpass to link campus loop with Rt 51
SIU proposes an underpass to route the campus loop road under Rt 51 in Carbondale and a joint underpass with the IC tracks at Mill Street. Architect Lonergan says changes aim to reconfigure the north–south couple and add a non stop southbound lane to Illinois avenues business district. The plan, valued at about 139000 to 150000 dollars, may affect future IC track improvements and requires city and state contractor agreement. The Carbondale council asked traffic consultants to study contract changes and supported pursuing the underpass if feasible. Other council actions included memorial day funds, aging committee staffing, a student body request on rail service, and union contract ratification.
