Church meets jeering miners in Wheeling on tour

United Mine Workers President Sam Church faced a rude reception in Wheeling as about 40 dissident miners shouted and carried picket signs. He entered WWVA studios for an hour talk, later left amid jeers before meeting southern West Virginia miners to close a weeklong eastern coalfields tour. The UMW plans a pre contract vote with the Bituminous Coal Operators Association Saturday, with Church arguing the deal is the best possible this year despite strain from recent contract disputes and a looming strike.
