Carbondale City to put police fire chiefs under merit board

An ordinance to place the police and fire chiefs under the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners faces council action. Mayor Miller favors the plan urged by Fire Chief Crawshaw and Police Chief Hazel, arguing it would protect chiefs from politics and align their status with other employees. Ramsey notes appeal rights and manager accountability, while supporters say the change strengthens job protection and merit based hiring.
