Keene Brothers See Rise of Large Firms Changing Southern Illinois Trade

The Keene brothers recount how small independent haulers and movers face aggressive consolidation into larger chains. They trace shifts from coal mines to steel erection and van line agency work, noting depopulated mines and a growing need for flexibility. They describe three business shifts since 1936, 1946, and 1959, and outline their current setup with 15 to 18 employees, 20 semi trailers, and 22 support machines. Both emphasize shared goals yet differing temperaments and roles in commission work and community service.
