Madigan blocks Chicago Thompson Center mortgage plan

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan ruled the 216 million Thompson Center mortgage unconstitutional, saying borrowing against the building would create new state debt needing three-fifths legislative approval. Stephens boy earns top five spelling bee finish

Alexander Christian Stephens, 13, finished fourth in a national spelling bee after months of intensive study. His mother Dyana drilled him from a 23,000 word list while his father Anthony, a Marion High School teacher, praised the effort and calm on stage. Teachers at Marion Junior High tracked his progress, and Mayor Bob Butler proclaimed Alex Day in his honor. The Stephens family planned a final party before returning to Southern Illinois.
