Reopened Freeman coal mine shows progress near Waltonville
Freeman United Coal Co Orient No. 6 mine near Waltonville has resumed operations six weeks after closing from December 12 1979 to April 14 following a wildcat walkout. About a third of the prior 600 miners returned to a trial period as management and United Mine Workers officials report smoother operations and ongoing assessments due to weaker electricity demand and a softer economy.
