Remembered one room schools of Southern Illinois fade away
Vivian Parrish of Murphysboro recalls the old one room schools in Jackson County with potbellied stoves, outdoor wells, and shared rooms. Teachers faced long hours, housing duties, and lessons in Palmer method, while pupils recited and helped with chores. The era ended with consolidation and population shifts.
