ABA seeks end of hanging judge system in criminal justice
An ABA study panel urges appellate review of all sentences to prevent unduly harsh outcomes. It notes cases where sentences are not reduced on appeal and cites examples like a 40 year term for a bank robber with otherwise clean record. The group proposes simultaneous appellate review of sentences with convictions and cites England as precedent. It also lists states with some appellate sentence review and recommends against isolated sentence review panels. John Katusa of Bowman Tire Mart Marion attended a regional dealer council meeting in Dallas.
