Heavy rains swollen the Columbia River and tributaries flood plains from record snowmelt. About 1,000 people evacuated as 1,600 acres flooded and 12 families left their homes. A 27 foot crest was forecast at Vancouver Washington and engineers battled dikes.

At Panmunjom the United Nations Command rejected a Communist move to temporarily withdraw the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission while preserving future rights to send inspection teams south. Iowa voters head to the polls in Des Moines for a primary seen as an indirect farm policy referendum. Key races include Sen. B B Hickenlooper against Dayton Countryman and Democratic contenders R M Evans and Lyndon F Wilcox, with Gov. Leo Hoegh unopposed.

Voters in Edwardsville Community Unit School District rejected a $1,625,000 school building program and a tax rate increase. The loss was about 2 to 1 against the measures, as reported June 4.
Yugoslav President Tito visited the Lenin Stalin mausoleum in Red Square and ignored Stalin as he laid a wreath for Lenin. He walked briskly past Lenin and Stalin after eight minutes, accompanied by his wife Jovanka in a pink dress.
Mrs. T. C. Ecton reported to police that a rambler rose bush in full bloom was uprooted and carried away from Lexington, Kentucky. The incident occurred in early June as police investigate the rash of garden thefts.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Taft Hartley act does not bar state labor boards from prohibiting toss picketing and violent conduct by strikers. Justice Reed delivered the majority, joined by Justices Frankfurter, Burton, Clark, Minton and Harlan. Justice Douglas dissented. The Wisconsin case stemmed from a Kohler Co. strike in April 1954 and affirmed state authority to curb violence without federal interference.
In Erskine Alberta police questioned a provincial legislator connected to the rifle slaying of his wife four children and two men. John E Clark 41 a time teacher and farmer represented Settler district since 1952 was missing. The four children ages 8 7 5 and 4 and two men were found dead along with the wife. A neighbor discovered the bodies and a visitor Bill Olah 30 died later of wounds. All victims were shot with a .22 caliber rifle. Police offered no explanation for the killings.
