Illinois remains 30th nationwide in the Kids Count survey, with slight improvement but below the national average. Voices for Illinois Children leader Jerry Stermer says more must be done in childcare and early education to reduce disconnected youth, while noting 53 percent of Illinois children are in nursery or preschool compared with a 40 percent national average.

Western Illinois University proposes graduate tuition guarantee
Western Illinois University seeks to extend its four year undergraduate cost guarantee to graduate students. If trustees approve, new graduate enrollees would lock in tuition fees and housing for four years starting this fall, a first among Illinois public or private universities. Governor Blagojevich supports the idea as a logical extension of cost predictability.
