Union Members In Illinois Greet New Coal Contract

Rank-and-file UMW members in Illinois soft coal fields begin a week of ratification votes on a new contract that may end a 69 day strike idling 54 mines in 22 counties. The pact restores a royalty on processing non union coal, eliminates the 45 day probation for new miners, and for the first time adds a $95 monthly pension for widows, per UMW Illinois President John Banovic.
