Mt Vernon Jaycees Describe Luring Beauty Pageants to Southern Illinois
The Mt. Vernon Junior Chamber of Commerce reveals the inside story of attracting beauty pageants to Southern Illinois. At the Illinois Jaycee Board meeting in October 1959, a hospitality room in a Rockford hotel dispensed $600 worth of refreshments donated by Mt. Vernon merchants. Eleven local Jaycees and spouses staffed the room while refreshments and favors went to visiting Jaycees whose votes could affect bidding outcomes. Mt. Vernon also contributed $150 for expenses. The group praised 40 participating young women in parades and events, noting the substantial labor behind the bid and hospitality effort, including 1 000 hours for the bid and room, 500 hours for the stage, and 4 000 total donated hours.
