New law could close many area jails by 1986
Cathy A. Monroe reports a proposed state law may force many area jails to meet standards by 1986 with no grant money available. Jefferson County officials consider a regional jail with neighboring counties to share costs while debates over location staffing and financing intensify. Sheriff Jerald Kobler remains skeptical about a regional facility, noting counties would still need local holding and the added transport costs.
