Rural fire protection study finds districts as answer
Rural residents feel fire protection is inadequate given taxes. Officials say state counties and cities cannot or will not fully cover rural areas. The 1975 effort to mandate rural protection faced city opposition, leaving locals to rely on themselves and possible new taxes.

Rural fire protection expands in Southern Illinois towns
In Sesser and surrounding areas rural residents since 1971 have been served by the Sesser Fire Protection District, created after a voter referendum. The district operates with 21 volunteers and five pieces of equipment, including pumpers and a tanker, plus a card system and aerial maps to locate homes. Residents pay about $26 yearly, with insurance savings around 20 percent. Elsewhere townships like Carbondale and Makanda manage their own protection, while new districts form in Lesser, Tamaroa, Pinckneyville, Coulterville and Grand Tower Township. Grand Tower seeks a district to raise 15 to 25 thousand dollars annually, improve coverage, training and school programs, and potentially lower fire insurance rates. Opposition exists from those wary of tax increases.
