South Moluccan terrorists opened fire near a hijacked train eight miles north of Bavensmilde as 55 hostages remained aboard. TV masts erected to relay footage were shot at while discussions for mediators continued with the Dutch government denying initial mediator nominees. No injuries were reported.
A 27 nation Paris conference on energy talks ends with no agreement on a lasting energy dialogue or a permanent organization. Algeria Iraq and Venezuela resisted. Saudi Arabia and Iran reportedly supported continued dialogue. Vance called the results mixed though aid to poorer nations and resource development saw some progress.
The report notes two agreements favoring developing nations. A $1 billion special action fund would aid the poorest nations with the US pledging $375 million subject to congressional approval. An in principle agreement aims to create a Common Fund to stabilize prices of non oil raw materials.
The Illinois Senate adopted two technical amendments to a death penalty bill and rejected a public execution amendment by 37 to 11. A final vote was planned, with Gov. Thompson expected to sign if passed. Separately, lawmakers discussed a free voter-records telephone check, a $1 million wage increase for about 2,000 state workers, a call to end forced school busing, and confirmations of banks commissioner William Harris and UAW leader William Bowling.
Weather observer Larry Baker at the Southern Illinois Airport near Carbondale says mild daytime temperatures and cool nights will persist through Friday and perhaps Saturday. He expects a frontal system from the northwest could bring showers or thunderstorms by late Saturday, but only a slight chance of rain. Daytime highs in the mid 80s with nights around the low 60s.
The Illinois House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment to the DOT budget allocating 150000 for a Marion flood control study. Rep. William Harris sponsored the measure to prevent a repeat of March flooding, passed by voice vote with only Rep. Roscoe Cunningham opposing. The committee will continue work on the 1.75 million Dollar DOT budget this week.
East St. Louis Mayor Ottolini and Herrin City Clerk Hopkins testified before a federal grand jury in U S District Court as part of an ongoing probe. Four Herrin officials were subpoenaed, including former Mayor McVey and ex Police Chief Humphrey. Grand jury sessions pause for three weeks to review evidence. Additionally Allen S Leary of Carbondale was indicted for illegal import of 1900 pounds of marijuana from Mexico.
The FDA orders a recall of 280000 Beechnut baby food jars due to mold in tapioca across three products. Spokeswoman notes no health hazard is expected, but lots produced contain mold and list numbers 7112 7131, 734 and 7%4 ounce jars.

A warehouse fire at 403 Walnut St in Zeigler drew crews from Zeigler Royalton Christopher and Lesser. Firefighter Bob Mitchell was injured when his clothing caught fire and was hospitalized. The blaze damaged the adjacent home of Lela Williams as water lines paused for a new installation.
