Miller blames industry for use of wildcat strikes
UMW President Arnold Miller accuses coal operators of provoking unauthorized walkouts by seeking arbitration over contract terms clearly spelled out in the 1974 agreement. He cites a 44 day Ohio West Virginia dispute that idled 8,000 miners after North American Coal Co challenged a helper clause. He warns such tactics threaten labor peace and recalls training needs for pensioning miners. Miller spoke in Pittsburgh at a dinner honoring William Finley, a trailblazer on the district’s executive board.
