Jobless figures show illusory drop as benefits run dry

Zeigler Coal Co announces 420 miners return to full production at Zeigler Sparta and No 11 mines near Coulterville after April shutdowns. Spokesman Mark Jacobson says the mines are back to normal and coal stockpiles have been depleted awaiting new production to fill orders. Unemployment figures in Southern Illinois show small declines but analysts call the drop illusory as benefits run out and workers do not return. Williamson leads at 15.6 percent, followed by Union at 15.2 percent. Randolph and Jackson lower around 8.8-8.9 percent with mixed demand across manufacturing, construction, farming, and retail.

Storms dampen Herrinfest after solid start Saturday

Herrinfest opened strong with 82 attendance but three days of storms cut weekend crowds. Jaycees president Bill Brown said Saturday morning drew a real good crowd before storms hit, estimating overall attendance down about 80 percent. Road races Monday drew 350 entrants, up 100 from last year, yet daily rain ruined band shows and other acts, reducing overall fundraising. Brown noted Lions Club profits and Cub Scouts concession were also down, but the Jaycees will pursue other fund-raisers.
