Rain dampens Memorial Day ceremonies nationwide
Memorial Day observances across the United States were dampened or canceled by rain and cloudy skies. In Denver crowds were small and in Topeka a brief ceremony occurred as flash rain fell. President Reagan announced START talks at Arlington National Cemetery, while others marked the day at Memory Grove in Salt Lake City and Fort Custer in Battle Creek, noting that many casualties have occurred in wars and honoring the fallen.

Brother's grave vigil in Minneapolis cemetery scene
Lonely vigil as Thomas Flood kneels at his brother's grave in Stary's Cemetery Minneapolis on Memorial Day. He says he visits the grave often and laments rarely seeing visitors except on holidays. A photo captures the moment.
