Victory honors Johncock in dramatic Indy 500 finish
Gordon Johncock won the 1982 Indianapolis 500 by 0.16 seconds over Rick Mears, earning over 290000 from Patrick Racing on a record purse. The victory ended nine years of unease for the 45 year old, who recalled the 1973 disaster when Salt Walther crashed and the race was marred by injuries and fatalities. Johncock led late, with an average speed of 162.029 mph to Mears 162.026. The win capped a celebratory week as more than 1000 attended the awards dinner.
