Syrians invade Lebanon in all-out effort for peace

About 7,000 Syrian troops with 150 tanks crossed Lebanon's eastern border to disarm Lebanese Muslims and Palestinian guerrillas, with reports of a northern invasion by 2,000 troops and 65 tanks aimed at stopping Muslim incidents around Qibyat and Andket. Palestinian and Syrian sources speculated Assad planned a large intervention to end the 14 month civil war, though independent confirmation was lacking. Some sources spoke of up to 50,000 troops by month’s end. Radio Damascus claimed cease-fire talks and that Christians would permit Muslim occupation of the Andket garrison. The reports described armored movements toward Chtoura, Jedita, Saad Nayel, Zahleh, and Rayak, with captures of some guerrillas and resupply of air bases as leftist militias resisted. Beirut Radio, now Moslem-controlled, called the ingress the war’s most important development.
