Verizon results lift Dow above 10,000 on confidence surge
NEW YORK AP Wall Street rose after a solid consumer confidence reading and Verizon earnings outlook. The Dow gained about 123 points to open above 10,000 as Verizon climbed $1.36 to $37.86 after beating expectations by four cents. The Conference Board’s index rose to 106.1 in July, the strongest since June 2002, and new home sales fell less than expected to 1.326 million in June, suggesting the economy and profits remain on track despite some near-term volatility. Analysts noted earnings growth around 15 percent this year is unsustainable, with 7-8 percent more likely long term.
