Nine miners trapped as rescue efforts progress at Pennsylvania mine
Rescue crews reach nine men aged 30 to 55 trapped in a flooded Pennsylvania mine after drills reached the chamber. A 1,500-pound drill bit broke, delaying progress, while two shafts were drilled 100 feet down. Pumps had drained 50 to 60 million gallons of water, air pressures were monitored, and decompression chambers prepared for the potentially high altitude exposure. Helicopters stood by to transfer injured or hypothermic workers to nearby hospitals.
