Floodwater Drops as Locks Open Ease The Bottoms’ High Water
In The Bottoms near Gorham Jacob and Neunert, resident Arbeiter on an ATV watched water recede after Mississippi River locks along the levees opened this week. Flood peaks earlier in May reached Thebes at 44.22 feet, with Chester at 26.4 feet as of Thursday, while backwater fish including a carp swam amid the flooded fields. Levee board official Glenn Twenhafel noted the water level fell about a foot since the locks opened and Easter flooding subsided.
