Cobden church aids limited English students to grade level

In Cobden a church hosts a summer tutoring program for limited English proficient children from Alto Pass Carbondale and beyond. Volunteers provide reading math and science help along with free breakfast and lunch and transportation. The aim is to raise scores and prevent summer learning loss while supporting hungry children.

Barefoot robber robs Citgo in Carbondale

A man entered the Citgo gas station on U.S. 51 in Carbondale Friday afternoon, flashed a handgun, and demanded money from two registers. Store manager Debi Tidwell said no customers were inside and no one was harmed as the suspect fled before 2 p.m.

Liberty miners hear optimistic future outlook in Saline County

About 141 miners at the Liberty Mine near Galatia received a hopeful briefing Friday from United Mine Workers officials on coal industry prospects in Southern Illinois. Workers idled July 13 and 75 gathered in Harrisburg for a workshop on job services, education, health insurance and unemployment benefits. Miner liaison Evan Sink predicted a brighter future, noting belief the coal industry will explode.
