Eddie Allen a 71 year old former barber hosts the Cuzin Eddie Show with Katy Ann Combs on WMCL 1060 AM. The three hour weekday program blends humor and freewheeling chat as Allen, who beat tongue cancer, reflects on a career spanning barbershop duel with broadcasting and a championship past.
Karla Lee, superintendent of West Frankfort schools, retires after a 34 year career in Southern Illinois education. A Southern Illinois University Carbondale alumna, Lee started as a junior high math and science teacher in Dale, moved to McLeansboro as guidance counselor, then led elementary and dual Thompsonville grades and high schools before retirement.
Logan College reports a summer record 2921 students, up 9 percent from 1996's 2669. Associate dean Terry Crain notes the new community health building and indoor pool attract locals while online enrollment rose from 229 in 2003 to 350 this year. CARBONDALE The Unity Point School board learned this week that its three top administrators Superintendent Sharon Burris Principal John Phillippe and Curriculum Director Mary Jo Diamond plan to retire in June 2005. The board accepted their resignations with reluctance but expressed gratitude for early notice. Board president Brent Patton noted the challenge of losing 100 years in education among them and discussed possible restructuring of duties.
