Syria blames Ha bib for Israel's Lebanon attacks
Syria's state radio blamed U S envoy Habib for Israel's escalated strikes in Lebanon. Israeli warplanes hit Palestinian guerrilla sites along Lebanon's coast and in the mountains, killing 10 guerrillas and villagers and wounding 35. A Syrian jet was shot down in the ensuing dogfight over Lebanese territory. Damascus declared it will defend Lebanon's air space and vowed to keep missiles in Bekaa Valley. The incident marks Syria's 14th fighter loss in air battles with Israel since 1979.
