Open Verdict Returned In Penrod Case

An inquest into the death of Charles Durward Penrod 55 was held in West Frankfort city hall. The jury found Penrod died by a blow on the head at the hands of person or persons unknown. His body was found in the Big Muddy river near a bridge on Rt 149 between Zeigler and West Frankfort.

Jury Indicts UMW Official Over Union Meeting

A Perry County grand jury indicted United Mine Workers official William Northern for assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors say Northern threatened Enos Bigham with a pistol at a Fidelity mine local union meeting on May 27. He represents the UMW welfare and pension fund and is based in St. Louis. his home is Bethel Pennsylvania.

Two Drownings Reported Near Kankakee River

Gerald Thaden 22 and Paul Vickery 26 drowned when their boat overturned on the Kankakee River Sunday. Two companions, Robert Bressner 23 and Ronald Milligan 23, swam to shore and survived. All four men lived near Kankakee.

Scouts Have Visitors at Valley Forge Jamboree

Scouts from far regions visited the Valley Forge camp covering 1500 acres where 55 000 attended as relatives and friends toured the site. Officials say more than 30 000 people visited Sunday. The event returns to normal today with plans for hikes trips and exhibits.

Lightning causes massive oil tank blast near Nashville

A 250 barrel oil tank exploded when struck by lightning, blowing its top 1,000 feet and igniting four adjacent tanks. The Nashville blaze damaged twelve hundred barrels across five tanks and damaged two more, with total losses estimated at 10 000 to 12 000 dollars. Pinckneyville and Nashville firefighters battled the fire for hours as flames rose and smoke darkened the sky.

Trunk Murder Victim Identified in New York

James F. Malloy, 53, of Philadelphia, identified by fingerprints after a trunk found on Manhattan’s West Side contained his body. He arrived three weeks earlier to seek work and had rented rooms from Oscar Schaeffer. Police say the killer sealed the body with tape and placed it in a lined trunk destined for a Los Angeles hotel that did not exist.

A bull of lightning struck the Elmer Starkey farm in Moro Illinois Sunday night killing 11 white faced cattle including a registered bull.
