Low income seniors receive fans to beat summer heat
Barbara Murray of Hurst collected a free fan from the Williamson County Programs on Aging in Herrin on a program that accepts donations of fans and air conditioners for income eligible seniors. Outreach worker Cindy Provost noted the effort has run for several years and continues with agency support from director Robert Childers.

Call 618-988-1585 to check eligibility or donate. Nurses visit seniors to advise heat precautions and suggest coming to the center to cool off.

An 87 year old Carbondale woman, Aileen Casper, died after being beaten during a June 12 home invasion. Police continue the investigation. an inquest is pending. Casper described the incident in notes before her death.

Five injured in I 57 crash in Williamson County
A one vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 57 at 2 25 p m Saturday injured five people Illinois State Police said Maricela Wilson 32 of Lafayette Ind was driving a Chevrolet Suburban a quarter mile north of mile marker 52 when she lost control and went into the median where the vehicle overturned Fernando Longoria 17 of Brookston Ind the only passenger not wearing a seat belt was ejected He was taken to Marion Memorial Hospital where he was in satisfactory condition Saturday night He would be flown to a hospital in Lafayette nearer to his home The other passengers Beatrice Longoria Pablo Longoria Cynthia Longoria and Daniel Longoria all had minor injuries and were treated and released from Marion Memorial Hospital.
