Court martial sentences Willard to a hundred lashes
July 12 1804 Lewis and Clark report Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark convened a court martial to try Alexander Willard for lying on guard duty and sleeping on post. He pled guilty to lying down and not guilty to sleeping. The court found him guilty of the charges and sentenced him to one hundred lashes on his bare back, to be administered at sunset in four equal sessions nightly until completed.
