Charges dropped against Du Quoin teacher in theft case
Perry County Circuit Court dismissed felony theft and obstructing justice charges against Claire Tad Cooper a Du Quoin high school building trades instructor accused of taking 1300 from the Du Quoin School District and lying to police. Investigators could not prove intent to permanently deprive the district, with new interviews revealing possible sloppiness or poor management rather than deliberate stealing. Cooper had contended the money was found in an envelope in a catalog after he was questioned. The district suspended him then returned him to class. he remains on a RIF list as cost cuts continued for the 2003-04 year.

Carbondale and Carterville police report diverse incidents
Carterville police logged complaints on three incidents including razor blades on Arbor Drive, flower damage at the 1000 block of North Division Street, and the theft of a 2000 Kawasaki four wheeler from Jackson Street. At SIU Carbondale vandals damaged a vivarium gate and thieves stole a bicycle from Morris Library. In Carbondale speed enforcement will use a speed trailer on Orchard Drive for two weeks. Franklin County saw a single vehicle rollover on I 57 near mile marker 71 injuring four in a Mount Vernon family group. Rhonda Collins was uninjured while two children Sustained minor injuries. two others were not hurt.

Roof Collapse Injures Two at Marion Construction Site
At a site near Williamson County Regional Airport two construction workers were injured when north end trusses collapsed during roof installation by Blumenstock Construction Co. One worker was hospitalized while another sustained minor injuries. Tim Petrowich reported.
