Death of SIU student remains a mystery
Pieter Badenhorst a 23 year old senior in plant biology was found dead in his Abbott Hall dorm room at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Coroner Thomas Kupferer said autopsy results are inconclusive until a laboratory toxicity test is returned.

Rend Lake Mine Closes as Consol Idles Rend Lake
Consol Energy idled the Rend Lake Mine two miles north of Sesser after months of apprehension. About 250 miners were laid off with officials calling the shutdown temporary, possible to resume within six months as coal sales sag and stockpiles remain high. The mine began in 1967, was acquired by Consol in 1986, and is among seven Consol mines idled this year.

Head Start Gets 1.2 Million Boost for SIU Carbondale
U S Rep Jerry Costello announced that Southern Illinois University Carbondale Head Start will receive 1 246 260 dollars from the U S Department of Health and Human Services for handicapped training and technical assistance. The grant funds education and staff training for students with disabilities in Carbondale Marion Murphysboro and Johnston City. Last year the program received 741 777 dollars and grants depend on handicapped student percentage.

Couple accused of beating child in Royalton court
Kim Ditto and her live in boyfriend Jonathan Brewer appeared separately in Franklin County Circuit Court for first advisement hearings on charges including aggravated domestic battery and child endangerment. The couple allegedly struck a 4 year old in the head face legs and back on July 5. Police arrested them July 7 at 107 N Lincoln St Royalton. The child was hospitalized and DCFS custody was sought. Bail set at 30000 with no visitation. emergency juvenile custody hearing granted. Arraignment scheduled for July 18.
