Extra lane may ease Carbondale traffic bottleneck
IDOT and Carbondale officials explored adding a second eastbound lane on Main Street to relieve the Oakland Avenue West Main Street bottleneck. Funds may not be available for two years, with a $540,000 project slated to begin only if highway budgets permit. The plan would restrict left turns onto Oakland, widen pavement, and shift traffic to through and right turn lanes. A bridge replacement on Old Illinois 13 will occur in about a year, with 80 percent of $440,000 funded by the federal government and 20 percent by IDOT, detours planned during construction.
