Humidity rise eased a wildfire within a half mile of Ventana Canyon and Summerhaven on Mount Lemmon north of Tucson. The blaze has burned at least 81,000 acres, with residents evacuated from about 200 homes and 250 guests from a resort hotel. Fire crews used aircraft but stopped planned uphill burns as conditions cooled. Officials say many homes are stone or brick and should be protected. Elsewhere fires stretched across several western states with about 924,000 acres burned year to date, well below last year.
Flooding chased residents from homes in western Ohio while sandbags lined yards in Montezuma and Rockford as storms dumped heavy rain across the region. In Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, winds peak and power outages linger. O’Hare and Midway reported delays.
