Cairo teachers, board near stalemate in talks

Cairo School Board and the Cairo Association of Teachers have seen little movement in summer negotiations. Spokesman Ron Newell said the union mailed July 25 to set a new session, but the district replied that talks cannot begin until July 10 when board attorney Barney Mundorf returns from vacation. Newell described a four year deal while noting the gap remains wide and urging a return to the table. The district canceled the end of school over 17 lost days, a point the teachers view as punitive. Supt. Robert Isomor and Mundorf were unavailable for comment.
