Gingrich vows to stay in race to GOP convention

Coast Guard frees ships trapped in Mackinac Straits

The Manistee, a 678 foot bulk carrier with 18 crew, and the 90 foot ferry Huron with 68 aboard, were freed from ice by Coast Guard cutter Biscayne Bay near Saint Ignace and Mackinac Island. They were escorted into Lake Huron and Saint Ignace as part of Operation Taconite. Nearby, a man trapped in mud for three days was rescued by high school students and a biology teacher in Albuquerque after a two hour swift water rescue. The man’s identity and condition were not released.
