Amtrak Still Far From Self-Sufficiency in 2001 Losses
A Transportation Department inspector general report finds Amtrak lost 1.1 billion dollars in 2001, the highest annual cash loss in its 30 year history, with no progress toward Congress's self sufficiency goal and calls for continued federal investment in tracks, yards, and stations. The agency warns that meeting the 2002 deadline requires cutting cash losses by over 300 million and notes a need for at least 1 billion dollars annually to cover deteriorating infrastructure.
