Lane murals a treasure hunt uncovering WPA and Progressive art
Chicago teachers sparked a citywide restoration when Flora Doody invoked a mural expert in 1994. Barry Bauman and a 22 member team mapped Lane Technical High School and 68 public schools, uncovering 437 murals by WPA and Progressive Era artists. Many were hidden behind paint, overpainted, or stored away, now hailed as a landmark preservation effort.
