Thompson May OK Dems Property Tax Relief Plan

Illinois Senate rejected Gov Thompson's plan to cap tax increases and moved toward a Democratic alternative that would raise the homestead exemption and allow local governments to abate current levies. The governors says the plan won’t help taxpayers as much as his. Democrats and House leaders said a quick vote was possible, while local officials urged closer scrutiny and warned the proposals would not cut taxes but cushion increases. Carbondale officials criticized the rhetoric and urged flexible local taxation amid concerns the plan could spur higher levies. Local leaders stressed they prefer state pricing guidance to remain responsive to residents.
