SIUC faces a stubborn bid by Wendler to avoid a history of failed union drive attempts as EIU’s faculty union, in place since 1974, has long engaged with administration. Radovich notes relations swing with administration mood, while Wendler defends a businesslike yet university grounded leadership.
Universities increasingly recognize graduate student union representation with more than 30 campuses already forming unions. At SIUC unions are debated but not pursued, while U of I faces benefits gaps and workload concerns. Union advocacy is seen as a path to address benefits and workload issues.
A King celebration in Carbondale brought together about 50 choir members from local churches for a 90 minute event. Speakers urged nonviolence and shared quotes from 1963. Donations totaling 1146.38 supported the Martin Luther King Center in Atlanta. The crowd joined in We Shall Overcome as Rev. Joseph Brown led a dramatic narration.
SIU Carbondale AmeriCorps members will help elementary and middle school students learn diversity tolerance and service in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Activities include color wristbands at De Soto Elementary, talks at Du Quoin Middle School, a Carbondale Middle School food drive, and cardmaking for abused children.
Many area offices and banks will close for the holiday. County courthouses and government offices shut, recycling and refuse collection delayed. SIU Carbondale facilities have limited hours and pools and centers operate with adjusted schedules.
