Nome Sees Winter Fuel Delivery By Sea For First Time

A 1.3 million gallon fuel transfer to Nome Alaska progresses with a hose change due to a bubble, no spills so far, and planned festivities including a Coast Guard helicopter tour for children. The Renda tanker traveled 5,000 miles from Russia, via South Korea and Dutch Harbor, aided by a Coast Guard icebreaker, to deliver diesel and unleaded fuel amid one of the harshest Alaskan winters. Bonanza Fuel and Vitus Marine coordinate the operation set to take 36 hours to five days, starting at sundown Monday. Nome’s Mayor Denise Michels says the event expresses gratitude to the Coast Guard crew and supports the city after a storm and winter darkness.
