Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge offers guided eagle tours into the closed area to see active bald eagles and nests. Three tours daily January 19 20 26 and 27, about two hours. Reservations at 998-5933. Eagles winter in southern Illinois and summer in the northern U S and Canada.
West City trustees consider a possible tiered rate plan to cushion a projected RLCD wholesale increase totaling 11 over two years and discuss notifying water customers. The board also revises outdoor burning hours and enforcement powers, with alerts potentially banning all outdoor burning.
Donald Brewer, a 34 year John A. Logan College board member and 11 year chairman, will have the Donald L. Brewer Gymnasium and Convocation Center dedicated this week between the women’s and men’s games in Brewer’s honor. Brewer, Murphysboro, retired in 2007, praised the gesture and recalled his decades of service with every college president. Robert Mees lauded Brewer’s dedication as the longest serving Illinois community college board member, noting his influence on programs and an extended campus in Du Quoin.
A storage shed on a flatbed trailer hit an Interstate 57 overpass in Marion and toppled onto the eastbound lane of Illinois 13, causing minor highway damage and one lane closure. No injuries were reported. Brent Wade Warner, 31, of Overland Missouri, was cited for transporting freight above height limits. Traffic reduced briefly as the shed was removed.
Pinckneyville, Illinois. Timothy Manning 39, a former prison guard, was sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual assault crimes committed in 2005 against two girls aged 8 and 12. The case, investigated by Illinois State Police, was prosecuted with help from Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office.
Archaeologists report shards dating to about 300 A.D. found east of town near a proposed Target distribution center. Post holes suggest a structure once stood.
