Schools fear funding increase isn't enough
SPRINGFIELD AP State education officials seek a 518 million dollar rise in school funding this year as part of a 5.7 billion budget proposal. They warn the increase, though 10 percent above the current plan, won’t avert financial disaster for 20 plus districts and falls short of the 1.8 billion total urged by advisory boards.

Illinois earns poor marks for tobacco prevention cuts
Illinois receives three F's and one B in the American Lung Association 2002 State of Tobacco Control report, with 74 percent cut in tobacco prevention funding and weak efforts on clean air rules and youth access. Taxing cigarettes earns a B for a 40 cent hike. County health departments face funding gaps as only 16.2 million of 440.3 million tobacco settlement funds reach Illinois for the year.
