Crainville village board adopted a unanimous resolution to install a new water line along North Main Street this spring regardless of federal funds. Village Clerk Evelyn Horsley said the project will proceed with local funds and volunteer help if needed. The board also voted to join the Greater Egypt Regional Planning and Development Commission.
Petitions for Benton Community Park District Board candidates available from Monday in Secretary Thomas P. Gulley's office at 602 West Side Public Square. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with extended hours to 5 p.m. on January 26. Filing runs Jan. 19 to Jan. 26.
Two former Vienna Correctional Center counselors contend their Civil Service hearing was flawed after being fired over a sexual incident in a visiting room. Judge Cadagin plans a ruling next week on claims of violated rights and wrongful dismissal, with back pay sought and civil rights actions pending.
The Alto Pass Water Commission meets at 7 p.m. at the Southern Engineering office in Jonesboro to review village water woes. A referendum earlier created the commission to seek water from another entity as the village relies on a small reservoir.
Buckner village board schedules caucuses for the People's Party at 7 p.m. and the Citizen's Party at 8 p.m. today in the village hall to pick candidates for president clerk and three trustees. Terms of President Mallory Brekovich and trustees Rolla Pasko and Barlow expire. Brekovich will not run again. The caucuses avoid a primary and tie to the April 8 general election. The board also approved monthly use of the school gym by Apostolic Church with supervision and noted the building was provided years ago with the new Christopher school opening.
SIU C President Albert Somit announced a search for the assistant to the president. The position opens May 15 as Richard S. Millman departs to head the mathematics department at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. Millman chaired the search committee. members include John Baker, Jo Ann Boydston, Benjamin A. Shepherd, and Bruce R. Swinburne. Candidates must be tenured associate or full professors or hold admin professional posts with at least five years at SIUC.
Vienna council backs Johnson County wide animal control requiring registration vaccination and tagging of all pet dogs. Ordinance approved by county board and sent to towns for approval with Goreville yet to act. Ray Breeden to enforce the measure.
