The Meramec River flood near Steeleville Missouri claimed the life of Mrs. Phelps who drowned or froze after a car was swept from a bridge. Her husband William J. Phelps 25 was rescued and hospitalized with pneumonia and a possible foot amputation. The couple were en route from Oklahoma City to Lebanon Indiana to visit Mrs. Phelps' ill mother.
C T Hardy 40 a St Louis native and International Shoe Co. employee, known in Southern Illinois, drowned when his car was swept downstream by Bourbeuse river flood near Gerald Missouri. Dewey Shweer heard a cry for help and saw Hardy cling to the submerged car before disappearing under water. The body was recovered Friday morning lodged beside the car. Hardy had left Bland factory at closing time taking a shortcut toward Sullivan where he would inspect a factory the next day. It is unclear if he drove into the flood or if road fill collapsed.
Senator Taft proposes ending most federal lending with exception for agriculture while President Truman presses for liberal loan terms to spur jobs and poverty reduction. Taft’s stance mirrors Capitol Hill resistance to Truman’s credit proposals as he cites a shifting federal role in the economy.
Officials await President Truman's approval of a NATO defense plan to release one billion dollars in arms to Western Europe.
